Autumn Yoga: time to reflect & refine

Meditation in Ulpotha, Sri Lanka

I start teaching my Qigong and Yoga classes in Cambridge again today after a glorious, long summer break in both beautiful Sri Lanka for the joyful celebrations of my niece’s wedding and in the wild hills of my old home in Umbria, Italy, where this Summer has been particularly unapologetic in its fiery heat.

It has truly been a Summer of heat, vibrant colours, adventure, celebration, fun, love and joy – just as the season of Fire and the Heart should be.

So I feel ready for the turning of the seasons and for the cooler, wetter energy of Autumn (which hit me like a wall as I stepped of the plane from Italy on Friday and is taking me a moment to adjust to!). This Autumn energy invites us to let go of Summer’s extroversion and to turn inward, to reflect on the past and to draw out its essential lessons so we can refine our lives for the future.

Autumn is also the season for cultivating focused attention, resolve and true discipline, made possible by the Heart-opening of the preceding Summer months. This makes it a great time for developing a regular and devoted Yoga or Qigong practice out of love and reverence for ourselves rather than teeth-gritting will (always doomed to fail).

So now – with the new school year starting and this Autumn energy of reflection and resolve on the rise – is the ideal moment for you (and those partners and friends who you know would benefit) to take that step and to commit to yourself to the practice of these healing arts.
